Program Management Specialist, Sociology, Anthropology, and Public Health
Melissa Cox has served as the program management specialist for the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Public Health at UMBC since 2017. In this key role, she manages course scheduling for five academic programs, including undergraduate degrees and graduate-level offerings. Known for her strategic thinking, efficiency, and upbeat demeanor, Cox goes beyond her duties—supporting over 30 faculty members, streamlining processes, and prioritizing student success. Her leadership during the pandemic and a recent departmental transition has been instrumental in sustaining and advancing program operations. She also played a pivotal role in revamping the Public Health Internship Program, significantly reducing faculty workload through innovative solutions. A dedicated team player, Cox mentors staff, improves recruitment strategies, and seamlessly adapts to evolving challenges. With over 15 years in higher education, Cox brings experience across diverse institutional settings, supporting varied student populations. Her commitment, innovation, and problem-solving skills make her a valuable asset to UMBC. Beyond her role, she values time with her family, volunteers as a youth football team manager, and serves in multiple capacities within her church community.
