Marjoleine Kars, Professor, History
Marjoleine Kars is an internationally recognized expert on early American and Atlantic world history. Colleagues say her rigorous research, creativity, and unique perspective on her subjects serve as examples to other researchers. Kars received the Cundill History Prize and Frederick Douglass Book Prize for her book, Blood on the River: A Chronicle of Mutiny and Freedom on the Wild Coast, which examines a nearly successful rebellion of enslaved African and indigenous people in the Dutch colony of Berbice from 1763-1764. In addition to her scholarship and teaching, Kars was department chair from 2011-2018. She earned her B.A. in history and her Ph.D. in early American history from Duke University.
