2025 Presidential Distinguished Staff Award, Exempt
Amy Barnes
Program Coordinator, Center for Social Science Scholarship
Amy Barnes has been an invaluable member of the UMBC community since 2017, first as an administrative assistant in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Public Health, and since 2020 as program coordinator for the Center for Social Science Scholarship. She manages center finances, coordinates programs and events, and is a vital liaison with partners across campus. Barnes is also a trusted advisor and thought partner—especially as the center navigates broader societal shifts and leadership changes. Barnes is a steady and positive force, ensuring an extraordinarily smooth process without missing a beat. Her professionalism, dedication, thoughtfulness, and collaborative spirit have built strong relationships across departments, and the center is unquestionably stronger because of Barnes’ steadfast commitment and unwavering care. She has been recognized for her exceptional efforts as Exempt Employee of the Quarter (January – March 2024) and CAHSS Exempt Employee of the Year (2024). Amy received her bachelor’s degree in sociology and master’s degree in professional writing from Towson University.
